Silver era secret #3: high volume
It’s really weird that ‘high volume’ training has become a shitty training system today by the standard of those fitness influencers.
They said that if you can train with high volume, you just don’t train hard, or if you train hard, you’re overtraining.
But, something that they can’t deny is…
The greatest natural of all time trains with high volume (20 – 40 sets a week).
Reg Park, Steve Reeves, and Marvin Eder, all the greatest silver-era bodybuilders, train with high-volume training.
And fun fact: Arnold, Robby Robinson, and even Mike Mentzer built their mass using high volume before they hopped on.
Because here’s the thing…
2 sets of bicep curls will break your muscles more than 1 set of bicep curl.
Because more volume (higher number of sets) = more training stress, and if you recover from it, you’ll grow muscle.
But why do some people get bad results with high volume?
From my research, I got the 2 most common problems:
First, their body is not ready for high training stress, whether it’s their ability to recover, work capacity, endurance, or their lifestyle to recover from that stimulus.
This is why I always recommend to people to progress with volume.
Start with 4 sets per muscle per week, and if you progress, you can focus on each set, then add 3 – 6 sets to your whole routine (not to each muscle).
The second reason is they don’t do quality sets.
What determines a quality set?
- Close to failure / failure
- Good form
- Done in non-systematically fatigued situation (tired, lost focus, etc)
